About the individual and the masses
Marina Metaal's work is always about people: the masses, the individual and the interaction between them. The individual disappears into the crowd or emerges from it. Each portrait has its own face and is so characteristic that people recognize themselves or others in it. The artist has made a matching frame for each portrait from old frames, which contributes to its individuality. The installation consists of fragmented individuals that the artist continues to work on during the exhibition at WG Kunst.
To appear. To disappear.
The mass is a massive and anonymous being.
A sheet of paper is torn further and further so that each shred appears as an independent island.
But all the individual islands together dissolve into numbers that swarm by.
