A World Shaped Differently
'Watching is waiting, and not yet knowing what we see. Waiting, not in the ways that we might wait for a tram. That kind of waiting is often caught in a linear perception of time, lacking imagination, a time that persists until the anticipated moment of departure. Waiting in this watching entails pausing to offer attention to what we are seeing. As well as attempting to unbind ourselves from what we think we know and believe, and that we often readily imagine as the only way of perceiving.' Caroline Kist is interested in creating images that are able to become something other than what we think they are. Seeking different ways of seeing, she works with light and shadow. In this way, things can shift in form, scale, and meaning. Resonant with - and as portrayed in the series It’s that you’re here - the world of her brother Reinoud who has Down’s syndrome, where the minuscule becomes magnanimous, and what is considered immense is scaled to minor. The images she creates quiver between what she sees and what she seeks. Knowing looses any shades of certainty; the practice is to pause and to watch, and to seek to perceive things differently. The image opens a portal to imagination, a different world.

Caroline Kist (1976) graduated from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam in December 2023 with the much-praised series and photobook It's that you're here. It was nominated for the SO'24 Student Award, an important Dutch photo prize. The photobook It’s that youre here has received several enthusiastic international reviews and is for sale in London, Brussels and Berlin, among others. The book can also be found at Athenaeum and the curated Museum Shop of Huis Marseille in Amsterdam. In her work, Caroline wants to go beyond what we think we know, but to also know that the extraordinary dwells in the ordinary. Pausing and watching become magical and enable her to see and sense in directions that seem to lead outside the frame, beyond the image. Caroline feels the urge to work in this slow way to elevate the everyday in our often limitless world. Society demands speed. And perhaps even perfection. With her work, Caroline seeks to practice and share something different. A world that is slower and softer. During opening hours of Atelier K84, Caroline will be present in the art space herself to explain her work to all visitors.
