150 years of Monnickendam

With the exhibition they also reflect on the 150th anniversary of Martin Monnickendam's birth. Monnickendam was inspired by painters from London and Paris and was particularly noted in the Netherlands for his exuberant and colourful paintings. He painted numerous subjects, from cityscapes to landscapes and portraits. His work was shown at more than 200 exhibitions during his lifetime, both at home and abroad, and he won several prizes.

In Publiek in beeld the striking theatre pieces are central, giving you an impression of the vibrant Amsterdam life of the early 20th century. The paintings are supplemented with preliminary studies by him and other objects such as programme booklets, admission tickets and floor plans from the theatre collection of the Allard Pierson.
