The arrival of the VOC changed the lives of the Griekwa, Nama, Koranna, and Basters of Southern Africa, the Mestizos of Indonesian Kisar, and the Nanda and Noongar aborigines of Western Australia forever. The effects of this are still tangible in their daily lives today.

For many, the traces of this human tragedy are etched in their souls. At the same time, they feel connected to the Netherlands through an invisible umbilical cord.

The Orphans of the VOC' is a series of portraits from a shared past. A past that would become decisive for the sense of identity of millions of people worldwide.

Geert Snoeijer portrayed and interviewed more than two hundred people in former VOC areas.
