Human endurance put to the test

The House with the Ocean View (2002) is one of the most challenging durational performances that test human endurance. For this performance, a performer lives in the museum's exhibition space for twelve consecutive days and nights. She adheres to strict rules, including not eating, not talking and showering three times a day.

The performance takes place in the recreated installation of Marina Abramović's original performance from 2002: three spartanly furnished spaces built on an elevation that function as a bedroom, living room and bathroom, separated from the visitors by ladders with blades as rungs. The audience is invited to silently connect with the performer.

This performance will take place from 5 to 16 June at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, as part of the major retrospective of Marina Abramović's work. The performance can be visited during the museum's opening hours.

Special evening openings

In collaboration with the Holland Festival, there are three special evening openings for a limited number of visitors: on June 8, 11 and 15.

On June 8 and 15, visitors will have the exclusive opportunity to experience the performance in peace and concentration and to attend an in-depth lecture by curator Karen Archey. In addition, there is an ongoing opportunity to participate in the performative installation Counting the Rice .

On June 11, there will be introductory lectures on performance art by tour guides from the Stedelijk Museum especially for members of HF Young and Young Stedelijk and there will be ongoing opportunities to participate in the performances Counting the Rice and Work Relation.

The evening openings of the performance The House with the Ocean View are a joint initiative of the Holland Festival and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
