Kaija Saariaho and Anssi Karttunen Asko|Schönberg
The closing concert of the Saariaho Festival shines a light on the special friendship between cellist Anssi Karttunen and Kaija Saariaho. Especially with the cello concerto Notes on Light. The Boston Globe wrote enthusiastically after the premiere in 2007: 'From the beginning, Saariaho's sensitive ear and highly individual sense of orchestral color are at work'. Asko|Schönberg enriches the world of Saariaho with a work by her last 'pupil' Vasco Mendonça and a glimpse of her Japanese fascination.

A special friendship and Japanese fascination
Anssi Karttunen, who paid tribute to Oliver Knussen at the Muziekgebouw in 2023, and Kaija Saariaho had known each other since they moved to Paris independently in the 1980s. They became good friends, and Karttunen has been involved in all of Saariaho's cello works ever since. The 2006 cello concerto Notes on Light is the ultimate musical translation of their band. "Saariaho uses many of her signature extended techniques, including notes deliberately crushed with the bow until they resemble sound," according to The Boston Globe.
This concert will be broadcast live by the NTR on NPO Klassiek
