Great Apes of the West Coast

'In Africa I knew what the color of my skin was, but I never knew what it meant until I came to the Netherlands.'

It is a story of starting over, rediscovering and remembering. A story that brings the sounds, voices and language of a West African tribe to Western theaters. For the first time, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura will make her own journey through the past to create a new identity and tell her personal story from a new perspective. Using theater as a tool to revive and celebrate the light of West African culture, Bangura aims to reclaim the narrative surrounding the 'Great Apes' and eliminate any negative connotation with the animal kingdom. A raw and powerful Afrofuturist solo performance.

Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura (1996) graduated as a performer from the Theater Academy in Maastricht and has since combined techniques from different art forms as a multidisciplinary artist: performance, music and film.
