Residentie: Magic Maids by Venuri Perera & Eisa Jocson
Eisa Jocson and Venuri Perera both come from countries known in part for exporting domestic workers; Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The makers discovered a link between the history of European witch persecution and the contemporary exploitation of female migrant workers from the Global South. Magic Maids explores this connection, with the broom as a bridge between witchcraft and housework. Please note: the end time mentioned is an indication.

Discoveries about the history of witch persecution in Europe
For Venuri and Eisa, a visit to the Museum of Pharmaceutical History in Basel was the starting point of a series of discoveries about the rich history of witch persecution in Europe. They discovered that the European witch hunt is intertwined with the contemporary exploitation of women's labor, but that witchcraft is still used today as a tool for the subjugation and persecution of migrant workers in the Global South.
After previous research residencies in Germany, Sri Lanka and the Philippines, among others, Venuri and Eisa continued their artistic research during a residency period at Frascati, concluding with work-in-progress presentations on April 19 & 20. The performance Magic Maids will premiere during Spring Festival 2024.
