“The Last Poets / Made in Amerikkka” is more than a documentary, concert or art film – it transcends genres. It is a cinematic statement, as powerful and uncompromising as The Last Poets themselves, a group of young poets who, with jazz and funk as their beating heart, rolling percussions and razor-sharp words, take aim at the oppression of African Americans.

Their poetry is raw, confrontational and infused with humour – a mirror of life in the ghetto. Almost forty years after their disbandment, the legendary founders of hip-hop, rap and slam reunite in Paris for a one-off concert at the Banlieues Bleues Festival 2008.

In the intimacy of their Parisian rehearsal space, they look back on their origins: the birth of the collective, the turbulent years of political resistance and their unbridled creative power. For this unique reunion, they are joined by icons of Great Black Music: Ronald Shannon Jackson, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Robert Irving III and Kenyatte Abdur-Rahman.

After the film screening there will be a Q&A with the members of The Last Poets.

About the origins of The Last Poets

Formed on May 19, 1968, Malcolm X’s birthday, The Last Poets emerged in Harlem, New York, a collective that, through an explosive blend of poetry, jazz, and early hip-hop, became the voice of a generation fighting racism and inequality. The group’s influence extends far beyond the 1960s, and they are considered the founders of spoken word and political rap. Artists like Nas, Common, and Erykah Badu cite them as one of their biggest inspirations.
