CONCERTS & GIGS

Editor’s Pick: Rosalía

For fans of: Nathy Peluso, Judeline

From talent show turnaway to global superstar, Rosalía has a story for the ages. Having released four major albums, all to critical acclaim, this year’s LUX is an all-timer, only furthering Rosalía as one of Spain’s greatest ever. Her show at Ziggo Dome promises to deliver on the fanfare, expect operatic vocals, gorgeous instrumentation and an experience close to the divine. Tickets are mostly sold out, but keep an eye on TicketSwap because this gig will be worth it.

Hidden Jazz Club

For fans of: intimate jazz, church settings

Amsterdam’s newest jazz offering, this club has become so popular that it’s going to be hard to stay hidden. Still, a rotating location keeps listeners on their toes with the next edition taking place at the iconic De Duif church. Featuring world-class jazz musicians and seating for 300, this is a night that promises both atmosphere and adventure.

Jamie Woon

For fans of: James Blake, Tom Misch

London crooner Jamie Woon returns with his third album, 10, Why, When, after a 10-year break since Making Time. Luckily, all the hallmarks of his original style are there – soft, soulful vocals laced with bubbling electronica plus a little groove. One for those wishing summer was a little nearer, Woon’s music is a welcome and warm embrace in the mid-spring cool.

Budget Pick: Sophia Stel

For fans of: Oklou, A.G. Cook

Perfectly formed synths in crackly packaging have made Sophia Stel one of the indie electronic scene’s buzziest artists. Her song titles might sound like they’re the musings of an avid diary writer – think “All My Friends Are Models” and “Everyone Falls Asleep in Their Own Time” – but the songs are very much the sound of a popstar. And for €16 at Paradiso Upstairs, it’s a no-brainer.

Big Thief

For fans of: Fleet Foxes, Phoebe Bridgers

Tender, gorgeous indie folk arrives in the form of Big Thief. While a little more wintry than spring in their sound, there’s always something musically hopeful as lead singer Adrienne Lenker flickers through the gently strummed soundscape her band create. Performing at AFAS Live, this cavernous venue will never feel as small and cosy as it does when they play.

CLUBBING & FESTIVALS

Easter Weekend Roundup

For fans of: Daytime parties

This Easter weekend, Amsterdam goes bigger and harder, in the spirit of this season of endings and redemption:

Indiesleaze

For fans of: Indie music

Infectious indie, new wave, post-punk, and electronica from the early 2000s return in full chaotic force at this indie-centred club night. With the likes of Crystal Castles, Soulwax, Grimes and Daft Punk all on rotation, there’s reason to believe that the noughties trend isn’t that bad after all.

April 3 | doors open 23:00 | Paradiso Basement | tickets here

DGTL

For fans of: world-beating techno

One of Amsterdam’s biggest festivals returns to NDSM Docklands for a two-day descent into the best electronica music out there. With some of the scene’s biggest names and most emerging, this is about listening to what you love and discovering something you might. DGTL almost always falls on Easter Weekend, so expect to call NDSM’s industrial setting home for a few days.

Wildcard Pick: Minimal Music Festival

For fans of: Sparse, hypnotic music

For partygoers who prefer a more meditative sound, the Minimal Music Festival offers a different kind of musical escape. Over four days, the Muziekgebouw becomes a home for hypnotic minimal music that’s as much about trance as it is about the transcendental. Now in its 10th edition, it’s inspired by pioneers of the scene like LaMonte Young, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich, and has been kept going by listeners who seek out the ambient and the adventurous.
