Amsterdam’s Farmless secures €1M to advance carbon-negative protein production
New funding to redefine conventional agricultural practices
Farmless, an Amsterdam-based startup that is changing the face of food production with its carbon-negative protein ingredients, has been awarded a €1 million grant by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The ERDF aims to enhance economic, social, and regional unity within the European Union. The funding will be used to validate its innovative fermentation process in a real-world operational environment.
Founded by Adnan Oner, Farmless crafts what they call planet-friendly proteins through the time-honoured process of fermentation, using renewable energy and natural microorganisms. Their method, requiring up to 5,000 times less land than beef farming, creates sustainable alternatives for meat, dairy, and eggs. With their brewery based in Amsterdam, Farmless aims to reduce reliance on animal products, restore farmland, and combat biodiversity loss all while addressing critical environmental and food security challenges.
Amsterdam’s role in the sustainable future
Farmless is contributing to global efforts to mitigate the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture. With the ERDF’s backing, the company can continue the journey towards scaling its innovative technology, potentially transforming how the world produces and consumes protein.
Sustainable innovation is part of Amsterdam’s DNA, which is why Farmless and others like Source.ag and Growy call the forward-thinking city home. Together, these agricultural technology companies are creating smart farming solutions that illustrate how science and entrepreneurship can drive innovations for some of the planet’s most urgent challenges.
