Couleur Vocale series: Ensemble Hermes sings Polyphony

Ensemble Hermes sings polyphony from the Leiden Choir Books. A musical treasure trove from the mid-16th century with music by Clemens non Papa, Nicolaes Gombert, Jean Mouton and many other well-known and lesser-known masters. Once collected and preserved by the College of Seven Hours Masters for the Pieterskerk in Leiden, you can hear and see them now at the Waalse Kerk.

Mahler Academy Orchestra - Symphony No. 5

In September, as a prelude to the Mahler Festival, a unique, authentic performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony will be given. The Mahler Academy Orchestra plays on instruments modelled on those that Mahler purchased when he was conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic. Philipp von Steinaecker conducts.

Unique Dvořák Maximilian Hornung & friends

Antonin Dvořák’s lyrical Cello Concerto: known among cellists as the ultimate cello concerto. Five cellos sing the famous piece in an arrangement by Paul Handschke. Moreover, the piece is shown with an entirely new dimension in this arrangement, which shines a light on an array of details easy to miss in the original music. The same effect can be seen in Tchaikovsky’s warm-blooded and romantic Serenade, in an arrangement for four cellos. Join us at Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.

Simon Pierre, Lucile Boulanger + Olivier Fortin with Grace, panache, fantasy

Trio sonatas for viola da gamba, violin and harpsichord. This sober description does not do justice to the sumptuous repertoire. In the Muziekgebouw on February 17.

Oster-Oratorium

Flemish Radio Choir, PRJCT Amsterdam and Maarten Engeltjes play Bach's Easter oratorio in the Muziekgebouw on April 1. Radiant trumpets set the tone, and jubilant soloists add to the rejoicing, especially when countertenor Maarten Engeltjes and great soloists like Sophie Junker and Fabio Trümpy perform.

City Life Asko|Schönberg

Steve Reich’s work has a pulse that lends itself ideally to translating the atmosphere of a metropolis into music. For City Life, he hit the streets to record the sounds of New York. Conversations, car horns and car alarms, a pile driver, slamming doors, and a heart beating. Played on samplers, they form the foundation of Reich’s ode to the city. He conjures up New York, in its unflappable vastness and its hecticness.

Canto and Karmit North Netherlands Orchestra + Pieter van Loenen

The Dutch-Israeli Karmit Fadael will present a violin concerto with Pieter van Loenen and the North Netherlands Orchestra in the Muziekgebouw on April 11. This special concert, which also returns to Fadael's Frisian roots, interweaves her innovative music with works by Anders Hillborg and the legendary Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt. It promises to be a compelling evening, rich in musical stories and emotions.

God’s own musicians by Insomnio

Birdsong: nature’s most elusive song has inspired musicians for centuries. On 21 March in the Muziekgebouw, Utrecht-based ensemble Insomnio revisits two brilliant 21st-century pieces in which birdsong plays the leading role.

The Preacher Men – Royal Flush

The Preacher Men preach the groove with ripping sax, gritty Hammond organ and drums that make you unable to sit still. The trio will perform at the Bimhuis and present their new album 'Royal Flush' on ZenneZ Records. It is the successor to 'Blue', which won the Edison Audience Award 2019.

Carolyn Sampson is ‘the best British early music soprano by quite some distance’ according to Gramophone. But she is also one of the most in-demand lieder singers in the world, together with pianist Joseph Middleton, with whom she enjoys a close-knit collaboration. It is, therefore, high time for a concert in the Great Singers series by Sampson, whose voice bears some resemblance to her idol, Elly Ameling. This ‘voice to fall in love with’ (NRC) effortlessly travels through three hundred years of song history.

Ikeda: music for strings - Ensemble Modern

Three new acoustic works by Japanese visual artist Ryoji Ikeda. Unplugged concert experience. The renowned Japanese visual artist and composer gained global acclaim for his kaleidoscopic sound sculptures, where electronics and new technology take centre stage. Expect a dynamic performance: Ikeda, a master at blending visual and acoustic media, creates a ritualistic experience where sound and stage imagery converge.

Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog

New York guitarist and jazz outsider Marc Ribot known for his collaborations with Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, will come to BIMHUIS on January 29.

Late Beethoven: Opus 130 Brentano String Quartet

Beethoven wrote his Thirteenth String Quartet during a period when he was tormented by family problems and poor health. After the premiere he replaced the last part, the Grosse Fuge, with a new finale. The emotional focus of the quartet therefore fell on the Cavatina, a work that moved Beethoven to tears every time he read his own notes. He couldn't listen to it anymore...

Dvořáks Symfonie nr. 7 and Van Sambeek solos in Rossini

The Seventh Symphony is the counterpart to Dvořák's Eighth from earlier this season: more melancholic, less Czech and close to the music of Brahms. Bram van Sambeek makes his bassoon sing virtuoso in Rossini's Bassoon Concerto.

Bill Laurance & Michael League

Michael League and Bill Laurance, known from Snarky Puppy, come up with a new, surprising project: the album Where You Wish You Were on which only the two of them can be heard. In this concert in the Kleine Zaal, experience Bill Laurance on acoustic piano and Michael League playing various stringed instruments, from acoustic guitar to the oud. Due to popularity, there will be an extra concert in the afternoon; there is a concert in the Royal Concertgebouw at 16:00 and 20:15.
