Rowing competitions are always incredibly exciting, but as the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in England shows, it becomes even more interesting when rowing is not on a track, but on a river with unpredictable waters. Since the championship was first held in 1933, Head of the River Amstel has become one of the most popular rowing competitions in the country. CinemAsia Film Festival

CinemAsia Film Festival will return in 2026 with a new edition in Amsterdam. With a rich programme that celebrates the diversity and strength of Asian cinema, from the cinemas Studio/K, Rialto De Pijp, Rialto VU and Eye Filmmuseum.  With films from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, etc. CinemAsia is one of the largest Asian film festivals in Europe and is a creative platform for Asian representation and makership. Shishani

With voice and guitar, Shishani delivers timeless songs that can sound soft and light but also tackle heavy topics. Influences from various genres, such as R&B and jazz, come together. At the same time, Shishani explores the musical heritage of her homeland, Namibia. The new album Whispers feels like a personal journey led by an inner voice. The songs are performed by Shishani’s band, complemented by a string quartet.

Cellofest: Kian Soltani and Friends

The non-classical side of Kian Soltani was already introduced to the audience in 2020 during his performance at Cellofest with the Rembrandt Trio and Kayhan Kalhor, the Iranian master of kamancheh. For this performance, Kian will once again bring Iranian friends: percussionist Naghib Shanbehzadeh and ud player Hossein Behroozinia.

Cello Biennale: Masterclasses

Students from all over the world come to Amsterdam during the Cello Biennale to see and hear in a few days what they would otherwise have had to learn over many years. The masterclasses are open to the public.

Cello Biennale: Cello-Yurt: Sangita Maya Fridman

Please note; this concert is sold out. Maya Fridman plays Sangita by the Belgian composer Wim Henderickx, who died in 2022, in a version for cello and electronics. Henderickx originally composed this work for cello and orchestra, commissioned by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra for the seventh Cello Biennale Amsterdam. The world premiere by Jean-Guihen Queyras was one of the highlights of the Biennale in 2018.

Cello Biennale: Bach & Breakfast Kian Soltani

Six festival days start as every day should: a light breakfast with freshly squeezed juice, a warm croissant and a cappuccino, followed by one of the six cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by a different soloist each time. A Biennale classic that is loved by everyone!

Cello Biennale: Cello Unlimited Kian Soltani

Kian Soltani is one of the most sought-after cellists of our time. In 2015, at the age of 23, he made his Dutch debut during the Sneak Preview of the sixth Cello Biennale. Since then, he has been one of the regular festival cellists. In addition to classical work, Kian has always had a guilty pleasure since childhood: bombastic and compelling film music from major Hollywood blockbusters.

Beethoven & Schönberg Belcea Quartet

Music is not a competition. But if points were awarded, Ludwig van Beethoven's crushing 'String Quartet No. 14, Op. 131' could well end up very high. Certainly if it is performed by one of the top quartets of our time, the Belcea Quartet. Belcea combines the old master Beethoven tonight with the 'String Quartet No. 1' by a young Arnold Schönberg, who would become the standard-bearer of atonality a few years later.
