Amaro Freitas

Raw, virtuoso and overwhelming: jazz pianist Amaro Freitas is one of the most fascinating musicians of contemporary Brazilian jazz. Tonight he plays solo in the Kleine Zaal, including work from his new album Y'Y. An album about which he says: 'It is a tribute to the forest, the Amazon rainforest in particular, and the rivers of Northern Brazil: a call to live, to feel, to respect nature, to care for it and to acknowledge it as our ancestor.'

Amaro Freitas

Jazz pianist Amaro Freitas was born in the slums of the northeastern Brazilian coastal city of Recife. From there he grew into one of the most beloved musicians of Brazilian jazz. With his unique musical ideas and unique touch he is a true revelation on the piano, influenced by Brazilian musical greats such as Moacir Santos, Hermeto Pascoal and Gismonti, but also by the great pianists of jazz, such as Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. In his solo performances Amaro Freitas knows how to tell a unique, personal story every night, in which narrative power and improvisation go hand in hand.

Y'Y

For his new, much-praised album Y'Y , Amaro Freitas was influenced by the Amazon rainforest. He immersed himself in the wilderness of the forest and met an indigenous community. Magical experiences that brought him a deeper connection to the earth. The musical result is an album with the mysterious name Y'Y .
