Peter Somuah
The young, virtuoso Ghanaian trumpeter Peter Somuah taught himself to play. By endlessly listening to his heroes, including Miles Davis and Roy Hargrove, he developed his own warm, melancholic sound. In his danceable grooves, you can hear traces of jazz, funk and electronic music, but also West African styles and traditional Ghanaian rhythms.
In 2022, Peter Somuah, who now lives in Rotterdam, won an Edison Jazz Award for his debut album Outer Space. On this, he pays tribute to Roy Hargrove and collaborates with rappers Amazumi and Delasi. The jury of the Edison Awards praised the album as a 'masterpiece'. A quote from the jury report: 'With his self-written album, he takes the listener to a musical cosmos where people colour outside the lines and stretch boundaries. He knows how to connect the new with the existing and thus creates his own sound.'
