Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninoff
Rachmaninoff was a great admirer of his older colleague and friend Tchaikovsky. As a tribute to his mentor, Rachmaninoff composed an in memoriam in 1893, his 'Second Piano Trio'. Rachmaninoff is best known for his compelling piano concertos, but his 'Symphonic Dances' are also his favourites. The Russian grandmaster and piano virtuoso wrote it for piano four hands as well as for a large symphony orchestra, with many brass players, woodwinds and even saxophones. This produces an exuberant orchestral sound with dramatic contrasts and unusual sound combinations.
