Over there! The skyline with its skyscrapers! Do you hear the subway rattling? Do you see the steam coming from the sidewalk? They came here by land and sea. People of all colours. Shopkeepers, taxi drivers, gangsters. Their own music in their luggage.
New York
New York, a century ago: a humming, bustling metropolis, the center of the modern world, and a cultural pressure cooker. It must have been an exciting time! We hear what that sounded like in the music of Americans such as Scott Joplin, Florence Price and Charles Ives, but also the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and the Mexican Arturo Márquez Navarro. Travel with us to New York at the beginning of the last century. Put on your nicest clothes. Walk through the dark streets. A door swings open. Music flows out. Come on in! In this Children's Concert, the Concertgebouw Orchestra is conducted by Sander Teepen. The text is by Sophie Kassies, and the direction is by Mart van Berckel.
