Festive American program
The Kansas City Symphony performs for the first time in the Concertgebouw with a swinging, American program. Gershwin's popular Rhapsody in Blue is full of sultry jazz themes and swinging rhythms. Award-winning American pianist and composer Conrad Tao plays the virtuoso piano part. In Three Places in New England, Ives combines popular American hymns and songs with dissonant harmonies and complex rhythms. And of course Bernstein should not be missing. He produces the dazzling Symphonic Dances from the musical West Side Story .
Kansas City Symphony debut
The Kansas City Symphony has quickly grown into one of the 25 best orchestras in the United States. In addition to its own symphonic programs, the orchestra also performs operas and ballet music with the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The American orchestra will perform for the first time in The Concertgebouw under the direction of their brand new chief conductor Mathias Pinscher. He was appointed as Michael Stern's successor last year, a few days after his convincing debut with the orchestra.
