Liberal arts
While studying at the School for the liberal arts, the American jazz saxophonist and composer Idris Ackamoor met fellow musicians Margaux Simmons (flautist) and Kimathi Asante (bassist) in 1971. Together, they form the group The Pyramids. The three of them toured Europe and Africa with the help of a scholarship and also visited Paradiso at the time. The band travels to different parts of Africa, discovering new music styles and working with local musicians. You can hear and see those African influences in their music and performances: a sultry combination of cosmic and spiritual jazz with psychedelic influences.
Afro Futuristic Dreams
They released three albums in the early 1970s, but the band split up around 1977. Thirty years later, in 2007, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids reunited. Old records are being reissued, the band is touring again, and new albums are being made. A double vinyl album was recently released for STRUT Records, 'Afro Futuristic Dreams': a commemorative coin in honour of half a century in the performing arts.
