Impressions parisiennes Quatuor Van Kuijk

Though they have a Dutch name, they originally hail from France: Quatuor Van Kuijk. In th Netherlands the young quartet is not yet well known, although that will undoubtedly change soon. Their recent CDs with the complete string quartets of Mendelssohn have been showered with praise. Tonight the Van Kuijk will play an original French program in the Muziekgebouw, in which great composers of the previous century are countered by their contemporary colleague Baptiste Trotignon.

These gentlemen

Trotignon is a jazz pianist and composer who pays little attention to genre boundaries – he knows his classics, but also plays songs by Led Zeppelin and David Bowie. In his new Ces messieurs ('These Gentlemen') for the Van Kuijk, Trotignon salutes the great French impressionists, such as Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré and Erik Satie. The Van Kuijk also plays pieces by the gentlemen themselves, such as those found on their latest CD, Impressions Parisiennes . The highlight is Ravel's phenomenal String Quartet in F from 1903, which aroused the admiration of Debussy – and many others.
