Marmen Quartet - Late Beethoven: Opus 131
Beethoven's Mount Everest in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Many consider Beethoven's 'Fourteenth String Quartet' the Mount Everest of his late quartets. For the composer himself, it was his favourite piece. A moving fugue is the first of seven movements that flow into each other without interruption. The wealth of ideas, the mastery of form, the inventiveness in the variations and the emotional range make this quartet one of the very best expressions of art that humanity has produced.

The discovery of heaven
In Jan Caeyers' excellent Beethoven biography, the chapter on the late string quartets is called 'The Discovery of Heaven'. And with good reason: just like Mulisch's novel, these quartets open up a world that surpasses all understanding. Beethoven's music captures the essence of love and pain even better than words. At the height of his creativity, he explores the boundary between thinking and feeling, between matter and spirituality.
Please note: this concert starts at 23:00, unlike the other Late Beethoven concerts (which begin at 22:30).
