Liszt's Via Crucis by Ivo Boytchev
In this program in De Waalse Kerk, Ivo Boychev plays music with which he feels a deep connection. The rarely performed Via Crucis in the solo piano version is a monumental work that musically describes the 14 stations of Christ's Way of the Cross with unprecedented depth. Using often minimalist means, Liszt makes loneliness and pain feel almost physical. After the break, Boychev plays three works in which Liszt combines religious feeling and pure beauty with a lot of virtuosity and visual imagination.
