Klaus Mäkelä
Conductor Klaus Mäkelä connects Mozart's Clarinet Concerto to a new work by Betsy Jolas and the Second Symphony by the Austrian Thomas Larcher. The orchestra is looking forward to Latest by Betsy Jolas; the 96-year-old French-American composer has never written for the Concertgebouw Orchestra before. Mozart's Clarinet Concerto stands alone in the clarinet repertoire. It demands the utmost from the soloist in terms of purity, timing and expression. And those are exactly the trump cards of solo clarinettist Olivier Patey.
Thomas Larcher
Thomas Larcher composes with contemporary sensibilities but is a descendant of the Viennese classical-romantic tradition. Conductor Klaus Mäkelä describes Larcher as 'a Mahler of our time' and his Second Symphony as 'the best piece composed in the last twenty years.' It is a true burst of energy with clear hints of the classical era and Mahler.
