Tenth Cello Biennale Amsterdam
What can we expect from this festival and which gems will be added to the Biennale canon?
The Cello Octet Amsterdam was present at all Biennales and with compositions by Arvo Pärt and Theo Loevendie from previous editions, it shows why this is the longest-running cello octet in the world. Nesrine and Chieko Donker Duyvis play the leading role in the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, supplemented by other bowed string instruments from all over the world. The soul of singer Kris Berry is embedded in the deep sound of cellists Annie Tångberg, Emile Visser and bassist Mark Haanstra. Pieter Wispelwey and his student Stefano Bruno, winner of the National Cello Competition in 2022, enjoy themselves with playful cello duets by Reinhold Glière. Nicolas Altstaedt and lutenist Thomas Dunford can be heard as a duo in Amsterdam again after their performance at the Prinsengracht Concert 2022.
