Schumann Weekend

Huge enthusiast

Nicolas is a huge Schumann enthusiast and is now considered a Schumann connoisseur. De Volkskrant: “As if he had stepped into the shoes of Schumann's imaginary friends and alter egos (...) the dreamy Eusebius and the spirited Florestan; From Poucke, it was both.” A festival around Schumann was his first proposal as Artist in Residence, and we are happy to make that possible!

Schumann was no stranger to extreme feelings. He even gave the different sides of his character proper names! Two of his best-known alter egos are the extroverted, impulsive Florestan and the introverted, thoughtful Eusebius. Schumann's compositions reflect his deeply romantic nature and thus give us - as if we were eavesdropping - a glimpse into his innermost private world. A poet par excellence who knows ecstatic joy and tenderness but also heavy sadness and depression. In his experience, he was tormented by evil spirits but was also visited by angels.
