Sorrow and hope: Cappella Mariana + Goeyvaerts String Trio
From Perotinus to Martin Smolka
A span of no less than a thousand years. In this beautifully mixed programme, the Prague vocal ensemble Cappella Mariana and the Belgian Goeyvaerts String Trio take listeners on a journey through the soundscapes of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and our times, from the very earliest polyphony by Perotinus around 1200 to a new creation by contemporary Czech composer Martin Smolka. And, amid it all, the genius from Estonia, Arvo Prt, is loved throughout the world. In his unique tintinnabulli style, he drew inspiration from Renaissance master composers.
Stabat Mater
The programme includes solemn commemorations of the departed and sung and strung lines of suffering, hope and peace. At the centre is the Stabat Mater by Arvo Pärt, a moving tribute to the Virgin Mary that both saddens and comforts. Catalina Vicens adds further colour, playing the magical organetto, a portable organ from medieval Italy.
