Beethoven's Ninth and Nine by Tan Dun
About 30 years before the creation of his famous Ninth (and last) symphony, Beethoven composed a song on Schiller's Ode an die Freude, an ode to freedom, optimism and self-determination. The final vocal movement of the symphony, which we know as All Menschen became Brüder, is still significant today. Tan Dun's choral work Nine, a contemporary response to Beethoven's 'Ode an die Feude', will be performed before Beethoven's revolutionary symphony.
