The band's music is a genre unto itself: it includes pop and rock, blues and folk, soul and much more. It ranges from alienated electronics to twisted cinematic soundtracks, swing to ballads, rants and prayers to diaries and hymns.

A genre in itself
Since forming in 1979, The The has released 6 studio albums and remains one of the country's most cherished bands. Always unpredictable, recent years have seen Matt and The The take side paths into film soundtracks on Hyena, Tony, Muscle and Moonbug. In 2018, a beautiful and moving 84-minute film, The Inertia Variations, was released, along with a biography, Long Shadows, High Hopes: The Life and Times of Matt Johnson & The The. The band last appeared on stage in Paradiso in 2000.
