Wired - Nieuw Amsterdams Peil

'Friday the Thirteenth, March 1970' wrote the American composer George Crumb on his score when he finished Black Angels. The subtitle 'Thirteen Images from the Dark Land' refers to the war in Vietnam that was raging at the time. The work hit like a bomb. The electrically amplified strings grab you by the scruff of the neck, every sound of her on the string is magnified. Never before has a string quartet sounded so hellish and heavenly at the same time.

Pretty little girl with a blue dress

Henry Cowell was already busy changing existing sound paths much earlier and caused quite a stir as a pianist with his tone clusters. Cowell was the inspiration for John Cage's prepared piano pieces. For composer Julia Wolfe, the song 'Pretty little girl with a blue dress' was the starting point for a string quartet in which she brings folk-like elements into a cheerful hyperstate.
