Chommie – The Digital Closet

With a dose of humor and satire, the work critiques the commodification of queerness in mainstream media and platform capitalism, and explores how digital algorithms influence the perception of LGBTQIA+ identities. The exhibition consists of a three-channel video installation and sculptures that blur the lines between digital and physical realities. Ehrenstein and her fellow artist collaborators use artificial intelligence to create works that reflect the visibility of LGBTQIA+ communities in the digital age. By making visible both progressive LGBTQIA+ laws in countries like South Africa and the continued discrimination against queer individuals, 'Chommie' plays with the boundaries of identity and representation in the media.

Playful visual language

Rather than focusing on victimhood, 'Chommie ���� The Digital Closet' uses playful visual language to spark conversations about the possibility of change. It invites viewers to think critically about the absurdities of existing power structures and imagine alternative futures where identities are not limited by commercialization or technological determinism.
