Security and safety

The queer world is full of social codes and unspoken intentions. Faced with the threat of discrimination and social exclusion, queer women have historically sought connection and intimacy in private spaces like lesbian bars and house parties.

The series shows the alternative environment in which lesbians openly seek a partner and thus appropriate public spaces. Amsterdam's Oosterpark, a historic cruising spot, serves as a backdrop for loving encounters between non-male people. The images do not correspond to reality, but to emotional truths that explore the search for connection and safety.

About Aniela Kurkiewicz

Aniela Kurkiewicz is an interdisciplinary artist-photographer based between Rotterdam and Antwerp. Her interests include conceptual art, intersectional feminism, visual semiotics and queer archives.
