FIBER matters
NDSM FUSE is located in a large hall, in the raw decor of the old shipyard in Amsterdam Noord. The monumental, industrial heritage forms a contrast with the work of 21 artists.
Artist and curator Sonja Cabalt: 'Textiles connect people all over the world. For centuries, they have been used not only for practical purposes, but also as a means of self-expression. Over the past twenty years, the image of textiles in the visual arts and design has undergone groundbreaking changes. This has been caused by the revaluation of classical crafts, the advent of innovative materials, computer-controlled techniques and the need for sustainability and reuse. The exhibition presents substantive positions on current themes such as climate change, sustainability, emigration and innovative, material-technical developments. It is a powerful exploration of the expressive possibilities of textiles in contemporary art.'
A selection from the work shown:
- Celia Hadeler achieves a great result with digital tufting astonishing 'trompe l'oeil' effect in her large wall hangings. Christiane Maurer weaves subtle colour gradations in her canvases with very fine industrial yarns and supported by a computer.
- Several artists, such as Francisca Henneman and Barbara Polderman, work experimentally with reused materials, creating organic, free forms.
- Working with textiles has a proven calming effect due to the often repetitive actions. Alexandra Drenth and Regula Maria Muller paint with needle and thread in their typical rich, ornamental visual language. The creative process offers them tranquility and comfort in times of chaos.
- Sonja Cabalt and John Sikking draw attention to the fragile nature with their large, organic sculptures.
- Global themes such as land erosion and the forced displacement of people are the subject of the narrative works of Miranda Kistler and Monika Auch in large-scale tapestries and installations.
- Three artists create portraits in different formats and techniques. Dan Gonen creates large, playful faces, Lia de Jongh embroiders fine, fragile portraits and Greet Weitenberg makes large, colorful masks.
