Ode to the Kinkerbuurt

From 8 February to 1 March, the public Passage of De Hallen Amsterdam will be the stage for the photo exhibition 'Ode aan de Kinkerbuurt'. With this exhibition, photographer Maarten Delobel attempts to capture the soul of the Kinkerbuurt, a unique neighbourhood where an enormous diversity of stories and generations live together in a few 100 square metres. A selection of the portraits will be hung as large banners on the monumental roof of the 100-metre-long passage of De Hallen, so that visitors are literally surrounded by the faces of the neighbourhood.

A neighborhood full of stories

For over 12 years, photographer Maarten Delobel has lived in the middle of the Kinkerbuurt, the beating heart of Oud-West. A neighborhood where everything comes together: from speed delivery people to yuppies, from the oat milk elite to pub tigers, and from 'real' Mokumers to imported Amsterdammers. By portraying over 100 residents, Delobel captures the diversity and soul of this vibrant neighborhood.

The exhibition in De Hallen is more than a series of portraits. Ode to the Kinkerbuurt is a document of the times in a rapidly changing city, where gentrification and rising house prices influence the composition of neighborhoods.

10 years of De Hallen: a tribute to the neighbourhood

This exhibition marks the start of the anniversary year of De Hallen. Since the official opening in February 2015, the former tram depot, after years of vacancy, has been given a new lease of life as a vibrant cultural heart of the Kinkerbuurt. With more than three million visitors annually, De Hallen has grown into a lively meeting place, where historical structures and new functions together tell a unique story. De Hallen brings people together.
