Spiel - Ulrike Rehm

Both Christie's Amsterdam and GoMulan are showing an exhibition of Ulrike Rehm's work. Both exhibitions will open at the same time and are a 20-minute walk from each other or can be reached by public transport (tram 12 and 3 stop de Pijp to stop Concertgebouw or vice versa). By following various training courses, Ulrike Rehm (1976) masters a wide variety of techniques. During her first training in a guild in Michelstadt, she learned to work with wood in a traditional way. In 2006, she obtained her bachelor's degree at the Rietveld Academy and in 2011 her master's degree at the Sandberg Institute. During these years, she focused on creating conceptual work and combined this with her craft background. Rehm sees being able to choose a time-consuming craft as a form of self-determination and as a counter-reaction within a society that is explicitly focused on efficiency. Almost all of her works are made by her in a one-woman show, as it were. In her work, Rehm uses a visual language from the GDR that is associated with masculinity. But she creates the works using traditional 'women's crafts' such as crocheting or knitting. This amazement about traditions and symbols can be seen in the exhibition Spiel. By creating awards and a podium, Rehm shows how interwoven play, traditions and culture are.
