Herdenking Februaristaking

In February 1941 tens of thousands of Dutch citizens stopped working and went on strike to protest the persecution of the jews by Nazis in occupied territory. The only general political strike against the anti-Jewish measures of the Nazis, this remarkable act of bravery by people in Amsterdam was swiftly followed by others in Zaanstreek, Kennemerland, Utrecht, Hilversum and Weesp. On February 25th, at the Dokwerker in Amsterdam people will come together to commemorate this special moment in history, and there will be a parade, wreath laying and speeches. History February strike

On February 25, 1941 , the only massive, open protest against the persecution of Jews in Europe took place in Amsterdam: the February strike. After the roundup of 427 Jewish men, an illegal manifesto was published. ' Cease! Cease Cease! ' it said above the manifesto that was distributed. In solidarity with their fellow citizens, workers struck on the yards, tram staff paralyzed public transport and tens of thousands of Amsterdam residents joined the strike. The action spread to other places in the region such as Zaanstreek, Kennemerland, Utrecht, Hilversum and Weesp.
