Holland Festival – Hamlet - In the Folds of Time – Christiane Jatahy
In Christiane Jatahy's idiosyncratic interpretation of Shakespeare's classic, Hamlet, after 4 centuries of being the epitome of male melancholy, awakens as a grown woman who wants to put her past right.

To experience again
This new Hamlet is confronted with violent power structures, without forgetting the acts of violence she herself has committed in the past, and feels a deep desire to radically overthrow them. She is surrounded by ghosts from the past – including several female ones: mother Gertrude and fiancée Ophelia – who urge Hamlet to face and 'relive' her past. Only by recognizing this past will revolution – both personal and public – be possible.
Writer and theater maker
Brazilian associate artist Christiane Jatahy established her name as a writer and theater maker with a working method that often uses a classic text from the European literary canon as a basis. By placing these texts in the context of our time and her own cultural background, she dramatically changes the dynamics of the stories we all know. She has developed a powerful theater language that combines almost documentary camera work with top-class acting and thus makes the complexity of the characters visible. By confronting audiovisual images with live performance, she challenges our conventional way of perceiving and raises questions about what is 'real' and what is 'staged', about who determines how and what and in what time frame we actually see.
' Hamlet is possibly one of the most impressive plays ever written, it has been waiting next to me since I started in theatre', Christiane Jatahy
