Gottwald beautifully adapted late romantic music by Mahler, Wolf, Strauss and Schreker into choral works. His arrangement of Mahler's famous Adagietto from the 'Fifth Symphony' is very well known. A late romantic homage to arranger Clytus Gottwald in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.

A concert in late romantic atmospheres. Hugo Wolf wrote some 200 songs in three years that capture the essence of the spirit of the fin de si��cle. Mahler also masterfully depicts the dramatic and artistic conflicts of his time in music. Such as Um Mitternacht : four searching, groping minor couplets, then the suddenly radiant major confidence 'Hab ich die Macht in Deine Hand gegeben: Herr über Tod und Leben'.
"Without him, a radio choir in Germany like the SWR Vokalensemble, which is dedicated to new music, would have been unthinkable," wrote the SWR Vokalensemble upon the death of Clytus Gottwald in 2023.
