New partnerships create new energy solutions

Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas, operating in the Amsterdam Area, has secured a significant order to supply 53 of its V236-15.0MW wind turbines for the OranjeWind offshore wind project. This project, developed by RWE, a German multinational energy company, and TotalEnergies, a French multinational energy and petroleum company, is located 53 km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea. The agreement includes the supply, delivery, and commissioning of the turbines, with installation set to begin in 2027.

Earlier this month, TotalEnergies acquired a 50% stake in OranjeWind from RWE, marking a key partnership milestone. The OranjeWind project will be the first in the Netherlands to integrate various technologies to balance wind power generation with energy demand. It will use electrolysers, battery storage, e-boilers, and smart charging for electric vehicles to create a stable and efficient energy system.

The Netherlands aims to achieve 21 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, 50 GW by 2040, and 70 GW by 2050. The OranjeWind project, with a capacity of 795 MW, will significantly contribute to these targets by providing enough green electricity to power over one million Dutch households annually.

Tackling key energy challenges locally

The rise of Amsterdam's renewable energy and cleantech sector sees multiple startups tackling key energy challenges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Notable companies include Greener Power Solutions, which focuses on mobile batteries; Watermeln, which integrates batteries with mobile hydrogen tech to replace diesel generators; and Optics11, which uses advanced fibre optics to reduce energy consumption in data transmission.

These advancements in renewable energy, storage, and efficiency highlight Amsterdam’s dedication to innovation in the cleantech industry. This project exemplifies the collaborative efforts of major international energy companies to advance Dutch renewable energy solutions and support the country’s decarbonisation goals.
