Recently, SevenGen announced the European Investment Fund (EIF) has become a cornerstone investor with a commitment of €40m for the new SevenGen Growth Fund. A sustainable investment firm based in Amsterdam, SevenGen is a company that is managing investments but prioritising environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors alongside financial returns.

Founded in 2023 by bankers specialising in climate finance, SevenGen aims to invest in profitable companies in the energy, mobility, built environment, and industrial decarbonisation sectors across the Benelux, Germany, and the Nordics.

SevenGen stands out by targeting profitable businesses that have outgrown the venture capital stage, offering growth capital to accelerate both impact and scalability. This fund comes at a critical moment for Dutch startups aiming for their next step, as Techleap has reported a decline in Dutch investor participation in Series B funding, from 61% to 15% in 2024. This trend may lead some startups to explore scaling opportunities beyond Amsterdam and other Dutch cities.

Amsterdam is home to many startups focused on different aspects of sustainability, from developing products that are plastic free, to software that assists with the energy transition. Many of these startups have transitioned to the next step of their business.

Smyle raised over €1 million euros through share funding, helping them grow and develop their plastic-free, vegan toothpaste tablets. Monumental, which uses robotics and software to automate construction, secured $25 million to expand its team of engineers.

With a growing number of forward-thinking businesses choosing Amsterdam, the city is on its way to leading sustainable innovation across all sectors. From Fastned’s fast EV chargers driving the energy transition to Growy’s vertical farms reshaping the future of food, Amsterdam is proving to be a hub for impact-focused business.
