A Toast to Philip Glass - Feico Deutekom

An evening-filling Glass program

On Friday, January 31, 2025, American composer Philip Glass will turn 88. To mark his birthday, pianist and Glass specialist Deutekom will once again take his place behind the Steinway in Meervaart with an evening-filling Glass program.

Feico performs some of the most iconic works by one of the greatest composers of our time, culminating in the Dutch premiere of Glass' 'Piano Sonata'.

'Mad Rush' is one of Glass's best-known pieces in the early minimal style, originally written to commemorate the Dalai Lama's visit to New York. An absolute crowd favorite is the music from 'The Hours', based on the film of the same name that deals with profound themes of loss and inner struggle.

Deutekom's playing adds emotional depth to this composition, which is known for its lyrical sounds. A special moment of the evening is the Dutch premiere of the 'Piano Sonata'; a recent work by Glass that combines the minimalist structures of his earlier pieces with the classical sonata form. This challenging and expressive piece, performed by one of Glass' most dedicated interpreters, promises to be an unforgettable premiere.

The evening ends with the ending from the legendary film 'Koyaanisqatsi', in which Feico also takes care of the vocals.

Feico Deutekom

Pianist Feico Deutekom plays a defining role in minimal music. He was the founder, singer and pianist of the Attacca Ensemble; the choir that created groundbreaking productions with choral music by contemporary composers. This concert was organized in collaboration with Cor Knoester of Hommage Philip Glass.
