Barry Douglas - B��sendorfer Piano Series

Irish pianist Barry Douglas launched his international career after winning the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1986. His love for Russian music is therefore great and he has recorded much of this repertoire. In De Waalse Kerk he will play a number of parts from Prokofiev's '10 pieces from Romeo and Juliet'. Although the orchestral version of this is very well-known, Prokofiev often played the piano version himself in recitals. The evening will open with two 'Impromptus' by Schubert, which are among Schubert's most played and beloved works. After the break he will perform Liszt's greatest and perhaps also his most beautiful piano work: the 'Sonata in B minor'.

International career

Barry Douglas has forged a significant international career since winning the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1986. A sought-after recitalist and chamber musician, Barry has performed all over the world, from the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican and Wigmore Halls and the Verbier Festival to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing and the Grand Theatre in Shanghai. Despite his busy international career, Douglas continues to celebrate his Irish roots. He is Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland, the only all-Ireland orchestra, and the Clandeboye Festival. Barry also explores Irish folk music through his own arrangements with Chandos, working with early melodies through to pieces by contemporary songwriters. In January 2021, Barry Douglas was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to music.
