Cello Biennale: Evening recital with Jeroen den Herder, Matthias Bartolomey + Raphaël Pidoux

Few people know that both Brahms and Schumann played the cello themselves, although perhaps not at the same level as their piano playing. Wilma Pistorius is a cellist and is composing the new work Timeflow for her former teacher Jeroen den Herder. Brahms' first sonata for string instrument with piano was the cello sonata that Matthias Bartolomey is performing tonight. This work is still one of Brahms' most frequently performed works.

Cello-playing composers and Schubert songs

François Servais was a famous cello virtuoso in the 19th century and composed spectacular works, initially for his own use. Raphaël Pidoux plays Servais' variations with accordionist Elodie Soulard. This duo made a big impression during the Biennale in 2014. Pidoux also plays 3 beautiful songs by Franz Schubert with Cello8, an ensemble of young French cellists playing on newly built instruments.

This concert will be broadcast live by the NTR on NPO Klassiek
