More than twenty years after his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Manfred Honeck has long been one of the world's leading conductors. In addition to Strauss's Four Last Songs, the Austrian also conducts a self-arranged suite of highlights from Puccini's last opera, Turandot . The music in which the cruel fairy tale is wrapped, sometimes lyrical and romantic, sometimes rousing, is beautifully expressed in an instrumental suite. The concert opens with the Overture 'Dichter und Bauer' by Franz von Suppé; after the interval, the moving Larghetto by the Scot James MacMillan is performed.
