Schumann's Symphony No. 3 and the Violin Concerto
Schumann's Violin Concerto – a final expression of his genius, or a prelude to his mental decline? The concerto, written in nine days at the end of 1853, has features of both, but the middle movement is among the most beautiful that Schumann gave to the world. His Third Symphony , the 'Rheinische', is the record of a happy journey with his wife Clara in 1850. Together the works provide a picture of Schumann's greatness, in good times and bad.
