Schubert's String Quintet

Franz Schubert was critically ill when he composed the String Quintet and he knew that his illness was incurable. Once again Schubert looks back on his short but turbulent life full of poverty and misrecognition. But also full of friendships and beauty. Therefore, there is no trace of bitterness. Schubert faces death with dignity and courage in this masterful chamber music work. The emotional opening movement, the tender Adagio, the cheerful Scherzo and the explosive ending, everything is of unparalleled musical perfection.

Ensemble Tamuz

'What did music sound like when the composer wrote it?', members of Ensemble Tamuz always ask themselves when they tackle a piece of music. That seems obvious, but music nowadays often sounds very different than it did back then. Due to major developments in musical instruments – such as steel strings and sturdier bows – and through interpretations that are passed on again and again from teacher to student. Ensemble Tamuz goes back to the source and strips Schubert's String Quintet of 2 centuries of ingrained interpretations. This makes Schubert's masterpiece sound completely unique and new.
