Debussy: pioneer, aesthete, troublemaker
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) did not come from a musical family, but he showed an exceptional musical talent at a young age. The music reviews he wrote under the pseudonym Monsieur Croche were feared and in his letters he showed himself to be sharp, eloquent and candid. His love life meanwhile knew fatal relationships and secret loves. During the concert in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, the musicians will recite texts by Debussy, which give an impression of his wayward and turbulent life. This programme is part of Calefax.
Debussy: pioneer, aesthete, troublemaker
The turbulent life of a musical talent in music and language
Debussy's extreme intelligence and idiosyncratic character can be heard in his compositions, which are still influential today. He had a love-hate relationship with the music of Wagner and Fauré, was lyrical about old masters such as Di Lasso and Palestrina and had a great influence on Ravel himself.
