Extending String Quartet: Island Suite Solem Quartet + Ayanna Witter-Johnson
Songwriter, composer, pianist and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson was inspired by Jamaican folk song and tells the story of her ancestors with her Island Suite for the Solem Quartet. Nearly a century before her, Bartk was also concerned with folk music, that from Eastern Europe. And again a hundred years earlier, Beethoven transcended time in his Grosse Fuge; music that as Stravinsky said – will always sound contemporary.

Let a different light shine
In their Beethoven Bartók Now series, the musicians of the English Solem Quartet link the work of these two giants from music history to brand new notes. Intention: to shine a different light on these iconic works by Beethoven and Bartók and place both composers in a new context. They explain the works using, among other things, letter fragments.
