A multidisciplinary evening
Usually music is added last to a film, but tonight it is the other way around: two filmmakers made a film to accompany existing compositions, which are performed live by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Cappella Amsterdam led by Karina Canellakis.
Brazilian theater and filmmaker Christiane Jatahy is inspired by the composition Music In Common Time by American composer Caroline Shaw. The Greek visual artist and director Evangelia Kranioti uses Stravinky's masterpiece Le Sacre du printemps as a basis. With their images, both want to make us think about abuses in our world.
Jatahy, associate artist of this edition of the Holland Festival, uses material from her enormous archive, filmed for all kinds of previous projects at locations all over the world, to create a film for Music in Common Time , an overwhelming work for choir and orchestra by Caroline Shaw . The Brazilian theater and filmmaker knows better than anyone else how to focus an empathetic eye on marginalized groups. Two years ago she was awarded a Golden Lion for her entire oeuvre at the Venice Biennale and was praised as 'a keen observer of the violent cruelty of our world'.
