Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 2
Bahms spent the summer of 1886 at Lake Thun in Switzerland. In high spirits he produced three of his most beautiful chamber music works in quick succession, including the Second Violin Sonata . This is a radiant work. The composer called the first movement 'Allegro amabile' , and he made no secret of the fact that the sonata had been composed 'in anticipation of a dear friend'. It is a poem in three stanzas in honour of the young contralto Hermine Spies, who came to keep him company.
