José James presents 1978

Vocalist José James, born in Minneapolis but residing in Amsterdam, creates a warm and contemporary mix of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and soul. He broke through in 2008 with his critically acclaimed debut album 'The Dreamer', released through Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. A glittering career followed: he released twelve genre-transcending albums, including through the iconic jazz label Blue Note and recently through his own record label Rainbow Blonde Records, won an Edison and collaborated with artists such as Flying Lotus.

No Beginning No End 2

On his most recent studio album 'No Beginning No End 2' from 2020, James is strongly influenced by neo-soul. José James is now a regular guest in Paradiso and on May 27 he will be here again with a new project: 'José James presents 1978'.

The album, due in 2024, combines James' deep love of jazz and hip-hop with tributes to R&B heroes Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Leon Ware in both songwriting and production. Inspired by a writing session with Ware in 2009, James aimed for '1978' to feel like Ware and J Dilla were making an album for him. Featuring an all-star ensemble including Pedrito Martinez, Marcus Machado and David Ginyard, '1978' exudes the socially conscious, feel-good vibes of Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder.
